FOOD4FACE®

Founder · Startup · Cosmetics

FOOD4FACE® is a startup founded by Mel with a deceptively simple premise: what if the cosmetics industry stopped treating eco-friendliness as a marketing claim and started treating it as a design principle?

The Problem with "Eco-Friendly" Beauty

The cosmetics industry is one of the largest producers of plastic packaging waste in the world. At the same time, "natural" and "eco-friendly" claims are rampant but rarely substantiated. Consumers who want to make better choices face a marketplace full of greenwashing, opaque supply chains, and products that are sustainable in name only.

Mel's background as a marine ecologist gave her a clear-eyed view of what that gap costs: plastic in oceans, toxins in waterways, and a beauty industry largely insulated from the environmental consequences of its products.

The Idea

FOOD4FACE® takes a different approach: formulating skincare products using ingredients that are genuinely food-grade, traceable, and effective. The name is the concept. If you could eat it, it belongs on your face.

The startup disrupts both the formulation and the framing of eco-friendly cosmetics, moving past superficial "natural" branding toward a rigorous, science-backed standard for what sustainable beauty actually looks like.

What Mel Learned

Building FOOD4FACE® taught Mel what it actually takes to be a purpose-driven founder: navigating regulatory environments, finding manufacturers aligned with your values, communicating a non-obvious value proposition, and staying solvent while doing it.

That experience became the foundation for her work as an advisor and facilitator. She doesn't just teach design thinking in the abstract. She has lived the friction between a good idea and a working business, and that shapes everything about how she works with other founders and organisations.
